Our Lab Manager is responsible for supervising, directing, and coordinating lab staff functions. In this role you would also be responsible for ensuring both the lab staff and Central Lab operate efficiently and effectively. To be considered for this position you must have at least 5 years of prior experience in a lab setting as well as demonstrated leadership skills.

This is a 40 hr/wk position, Monday - Friday, primarily located at our Central Lab in Tigard with the occasional need to travel to our other locations.


  • Responsible for departmental goal setting and direction of department functions.  Works with Practice Manager to determine department long term goals and needs.
  • Establishes department priorities by answering questions and requests; establishes quality standards, methods and procedures; schedules activities and employees; monitors progress; revises schedules and resolves problems.
  • Manages performance, training, development and scheduling of lab staff.  Approves employee schedules, absences, overtime and vacation.  Works with Practice Manager in the hiring and termination process.  Writes and conducts clinical staff performance evaluations. Documents performance and attendance.
  • Consults with Practice Manager regarding employee issues and results as appropriate.
  • Partners with Practice Manager in decision making and problem solving for annual evaluations, developmental coaching and corrective action.
  • Responsible for employment and selection decisions. Completes and forwards employment requisitions for personnel replacements to Human Resources.  Interviews, checks references and makes hiring decisions for new employees, in coordination with Human Resources.  Works with Human Resources to resolve compensation issues and determine starting pay for new hires.  Notifies the Practice Manager of hiring decisions and involves Practice Manager as needed. 
  • Coaches, trains and develops lab staff and promotes teamwork within WHA. 
  • Maintains continuity among work teams within WHA by fostering a spirit of cooperation.
  • Serves as an employee role model in all patient interactions by remaining friendly, courteous and helpful.  Ensures patient, staff and clinician satisfaction through efficient clinical staff operations. Solves lab staff problems as needed, or refers to Practice Manager. Responds to complaints and seeks resolution.
  • Maintains customer confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Approves employee schedules, absences, overtime and vacation.  Ensures staffing coverage meets the needs of the Central Lab. 
  • Coordinates agendas and conducts department meetings.
  • Performs the duties of a Medical Technologist as outlined in the relevant job description and depending upon individual's qualifications.
  • Assists in analysis and implementation of new tests.
  • Conducts training on lab procedures and Orchard lab software for new Lab Assistants.  Trains Central Lab staff and clinic Lab Assistants on Orchard as needed.


  • Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology or related science or the equivalent combination of classroom training and/or work experience required.
  • Registered Medical Technologist, ASCP, or equivalent certification required.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills required.
  • Prior experience with or the ability to learn practice management and lab software required.
  • Proficient in each area of laboratory testing.
  • Prefer at least five years of experience as a medical technologist.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of use and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Ability to develop lab standards and procedures.
  • Demonstrated success in service excellence and quality improvement.
  • Ability to lead at a high level of excellence and to train others in the essential job functions for the position(s) for which they are responsible.
  • Proven effective communications skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment and effectively work with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow through in great detail with a high level of accuracy.
  • Current driver's license and vehicle, or ability to procure transportation to other clinics or meeting sites.
  • Ability to demonstrate the Values Statement and The Patient Experience of WHA.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
